Make a Difference Day - October 24, 2009

On Saturday our troop participated in a wonderful service project called Make a Difference Day. We aided several hundred people (mostly linked to the military in one way or another) to clean up Turkey Creek Ranch on Ft. Carson. It was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to thank our soldiers, and to learn how great it feels to serve others with our hard work. Alex' mom, Miss Beth told us about the opportunity and got us signed up to work. We owe her a big thanks for serving our country, for sharing Alex with us, and for finding us our first service project.

The day started off cold, and gloomy with winds that were causing the girls to shiver, but soon we were shedding layers of clothing and enjoying a beautiful Colorado blue-sky day. We raked the morning away, filling bag after bag with leaves. The girls were hard workers, and at the end we took a little time to play before bagging up the final piles of leaves.
Hopefully we will have many more opportunities to serve!

Budding Photographers!

Our girls are learning about photos as we said in an earlier blog. Here is a sampling of some amazing photos the girls took. The composition, lighting and angles are all great. Enjoy!

Cemetary Scavenger Hunt and Bonfires - October 2009/

On Saturday, October 17th our troop participated in a great service unit activity. First we visited our tiny local cemetery where we located headstones of interest. In the process we learned about our veterans, our local history and the way we commemorate those we love after they are gone from the earth. The funniest one was that we learned about a local fugitive who died when he was trying to a blocade. They think Jim Hood was buried with his motorcycle!

We missed Angelica when we visited M Lazy C Ranch, where Cora, Alexis and Alex enjoyed a hayride, which was followed by burgers, baked beans, corn and chips. Yum! Afterwards we made S'mores and enjoyed the bonfire.

Earning Photography and Computer Badges.

Troop 2089 has the four best girls! Yesterday's meeting flew by and we only accomplished a portion of what Miss Pattie and I hoped to do. The weather was fantastic so we took to the outdoors and learned more about photography. We took photos of trees and flowers and objects and each other. We learned about avoiding shadows and how to get the best angles. These girls are well on their way to earning our first two badges, Camera Shots and Cyber Girl! By Christmas we should have both.

Our next meeting is in 13 days. The founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low was born on October 31, 1860. We will celebrate her and the history of Girl Scouting at that meeting. We hope to have a guest here who can tell us more about Girl Scouting 40-50 years ago. We should learn a lot and have a great time! Juliette saw how great scouting was for boys and felt it was important that girls had a similar opportunity to gather together, socialize, and learn. We are here today as a troop because of Juliette. As we learn about Juliette and from older Girl Scouts like Miss Pattie and I, we will also be earning a third badge, Girl Scouting in the USA.
I will post some photos from our outing to the local cemetary and to the M Lazy C ranch in my next post.

Making Spirit Bracelets!

Our first two meetings we made really cool Spirit bracelets. Miss Pattie is jewelry maker and she created a pattern. Now we have bracelets to wear to school spirit days and sporting events!

The same day we started taking photos of each other (we will all get discs of all pictures taken at the end of the year), learning photography and and more about computers. You will see many of the pictures we take of one another right here on our awesome blog! :)

Getting pinned, part 2.

Miss Pattie pinned Alex,

and, Miss Kelly pinned Alexis,

and, Miss Pattie pinned Angelica,

and, Miss Kelly pinned Cora!

Its official, we are pinned!

Our first meeting we were pinned. Miss Kelly and Miss Pattie put the pins on upside down and we weren't allowed to flip them until we each did a good deed.
